In 1996, the Washington State Legislature established rules mandating all establishments that provide extended living facilities (including hotels and nursing homes) must have an onsite notification system that identifies, for 911 calls, the room in which an emergency is taking place. This means that the property’s telephone system must be capable of transmitting the room number directly to the 911 operator.
In February 2002, the Washington State Emergency Management Division revisited the statute, mandating the rules to be applied uniformly across the state in a timely fashion.
